Father type for MGM movies and TV. Appeared as a judge in Disney films. Started as a detective type in Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932). His favorite father role was in Meet Me in St. Louis (1944). He played the father to Doris Day in movies based on Hoosier Booth Tarkington's Penrod stories (1951). On TV, he was the father in Life with Father (1953-55) and Father of the Bride (1962-63). He played Mr. Ed's second neighbor (1963-65). His last role was of Kathleen Turner's grandfather in Peggy Sue Got Married (1986).
